Crossroad In Her Living Room... Laureen's story: A glimpse into our rhythm...

Between one set of jumping jacks and the next, Laureen checked the oven timer. The cake was already browning inside, its scent teasing her like warm wind drifting from a summer field.
On the next set, she ran around the countertop while straining her ears toward the first floor, listening at her daughter’s bedroom door.
Her son, remote in hand, glanced at her without lowering his eyes from the TV.
With one eye, she observed what was unfolding between her pets. Astor, her enormous dog, prowled the rug, while Pudim, the tiny orange cat, circled like a flame, darting between his legs and the furniture with the unpredictable rhythm of wildfire sparks.
“When I brought Pudim from the shelter, I never thought those two would end up like this,” she whispered to herself.
Right as the cat darted under the dog, fearless and tiny, a streak of orange against the beige rug, she called out,
“Astor, be gentle!”
“You told me not to turn up the TV volume, and then you yell louder than the cartoons,” Danny protested from the sofa.
“Sorry, love. It’s stronger than me.”
The doorbell rang. Laureen froze. Astor’s ears shot up. Pudim’s eyes widened, a ripple across a still pond.
She turned her body to the front door, but the oven beeped… Brisk, punctual, unforgiving as always.
So, she turned back and looked for her son. Pudim jumped to the chair like a spring-loaded orange.
The timer beeped again, short and bossy, like a woodpecker insisting on being heard…
